Discover Italy 2: Central (Chelt)
We continue our Italian discovery into the heart of Italy, and its most famous region, Tuscany (Toscana). The red wines of this region are dominated by the ancient Sangiovese grape variety: whether Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano or Brunello, this is the foremost variety in the blend (often 100%), despite the rise of the 'Supertuscans' made with the help of interlopers such as Cabernet Sauvignon. This brings us to the question: are modern Supertuscan reds a better purchase than the traditional Sangiovese-led wines of Tuscany? Only a tasting can decide...
Whites are represented by the refreshing Vernaccia, from San Gimignano, as well as Orvieto from Umbria. On the Adriatic side of central Italy, the Marche produces some fine whites, most notably from the Verdicchio grape variety. This tasting is designed to explore the diverse variety of wines available from Italy produced from their fascinating indigenous grape varieties most of which are only found within Italy.
Big wine to look forward to: Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.
