Discover Italy 1: North and North East (Oxford)
Join us as we kick off our tour of Italy with a tasting of the wines of northern Italy, including Piedmont (Piemonte), the Veneto and Friuli.
Piemonte is the home of Barolo, Barberesco, Gavi and Asti, made from key grape varieties such as Nebbiolo, Barbera, Cortese and Dolcetto. In addition there are up-and-coming wines from the regions next-door such as Lombardy where Nebbiolo also flourishes and Trentino Alto-Adige where there are aromatic whites and vibrant reds such as Lagrein and Teroldego.
The Veneto is well-known as the home to Prosecco: it also hosts the Corvina grape variety, the backbone powerhouse grape behind Bardolino and Valpolicella in all its guises, including Ripasso and Amarone. White wine production is dominated by Soave with increasing amounts of Pinot Grigio found here. The region of Friuli is extremely exciting with the variety Friuliano carving out a reputation for high quality white.
This tasting is designed to explore the diverse variety of wines available from Italy produced from their fascinating indigenous grape varieties most of which are only found within Italy.
Big wine to look forward to: Amarone DOCG
